Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive

Providing a driving experience that's safe and also enjoyable is the top priority of Subaru engineers. That's why almost every Subaru vehicle comes equipped with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as a standard feature. For the utmost confidence and control, there's simply no substitute. Every day on the road presents unexpected conditions and unexpected events, and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive helps drivers cope with these challenges by distributing torque to all four wheels, providing traction where front- or rear-wheel-drive cars falter. Whenever you're driving a Subaru equipped with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, rest assured you'll have peace of mind and confidence wherever you go.

Lineatronic

Designed to get the most out of your SUBARU BOXER engine and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, the efficient Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission keeps the engine in its ideal power range to give the Outback its class-leading fuel consumption. Shift controls keep the ride light, smooth and responsive on both the 2.5-litre and 3.6-litre engines, whilst the Lineartronic in 3.6R-L also handles the higher-torque output with less mechanical noise for a smoother, quieter drive. The shift controls have a stepped variable control that stays in tune with changes in vehicle speed and engine speed, allowing the driver to feel shift points when accelerating to form a strong and comfortable connection between car and driver.

Balanced & composed

The engine can be mounted lower in the vehicle than other engines, and weight balance on the left and right can be made almost exactly the same. In this design, the low centre of gravity engine lowers the centre of gravity of the entire car. Similarly, a symmetrically balanced engine increases the symmetrical balance of the entire car. Both of these aspects combine to deliver a safer, more stable, and ultimately, more enjoyable experience on the road.
